Happy New Year to Everyone!

Wanted to wish you all a great and safe Happy New Year!  A new blog layout will be revealed sometime during January 1st, 2007.

Regards,

oneninefive

P.S. I have been trying to post a comment on Buzzair's blog regarding the execution of Saddam Hussein. I keep on getting a blank page when clicking on the link to make comments.  Guess blogger is overwhelmed by people wishing others a Happy New Year.

Wanted to say it was very sad to see a great leader be executed.  Saddam Hussein will be missed by a lot of people and I cannot help wonder why it was him who was executed instead of George F. Bush.  The Bush should have been executed instead of Hussein.  Hussein brought law and order to Iraq; Bush brought lawless and disorder to Iraq.  Now who is the greater leader?

A New Year Resolution for Bell Relay Service:

I was fiddling around on the internet after looking for places to buy 70's style pants for the New Year Eve party I am attending. Decided to check Bell's website to find out what kind of internet services they provide for the Deaf people in Canada. Turns out that they only have two web pages dedicated to Bell Relay Service:

  1. http://www.bell.ca/specialneeds/PrsSN_ContactUs.page
  2. http://www.bell.ca/specialneeds/PrsSN_SvcRelay.page
I decided that I would send them an email to inquire about the quality of their relay services share information about the modern technology being used to provide relay services for the Deaf. Enclosed with this blog is the letter I sent to Bell regarding their Relay Services.

Office of the Manager

December 30, 2006

Dear Sir/Madam;

Hello, I am a Deaf person living in Ontario and I moved to the United States almost ten years ago and moved back to Ontario a few months ago. I wanted to comment on Bell's commitment to provide Relay Services for the Deaf in Canada. I studied Business Administration Management and one of the courses I took focused on Quality Assurance and when I compare the Relay Services Bell provided ten years ago and today, the quality remains the same.

I would like to find out what kind of actions Bell has taken to increase the quality of Bell Relay Services? It was difficult for me to find contact information to share my concerns. Does Bell Relay Services benchmark its' own relay services against other relay service providers, including relay services provided in other countries? I believe there are opportunities to provide relay services at lower costs using other technology that is readily available in the Deaf community. The Teletype devices that Bell Relay Services was developed more than fifteen year ago are rapidly becoming obsolete (I never used the TTY during my entire time living in the United States, but was able to make phone calls to Deaf impaired (hearing) people),
The technology I am talking about takes advantage of the internet. Has Bell investigated the opportunity of implementing the internet for relay services? Have you ever experimented with something called IP Relay? There are plenty of companies in the United States that provide IP Relay Services, to list a few for example: www.ip-relay.com, www.sprintip.com, http://www.siprelay.com, and so on. There are other advanced relay service technology out there that take advantage of our natural language, American Sign Language. Those relay services are called Video Relay Services (VRS) and they use either web cams or video phones (see what video phones are like at http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=8&sec=0 ). If you want to learn more about those services, these are websites of the companies that provide Video Relay Services: www.ip-vrs.com, www.sorensonvrs.com, www.sprintvrs.com, www.hovrs.com and so on.

I look forward to talking with someone from Bell Relay Services about modernizing Canada's relay services quality. Bringing Bell Relay Service out of the "stone age" era should be one of Bell's New Year Resolution for 2007.

Sincerely yours,

oneninefive

Let's see if the Office of the Manager responds. I encourage everyone else who wants some kind of internet based technology be put into use for Relay Services in Canada to send their comments and suggestions to the Office of the Manger at
accessible@bell.ca. This way we can hope that they make this technology their New Year Resolution.

Anatomy of Execution by Hanging:

Saddam Hussein is posed to be executed sometime today or tomorrow (Saturday the latest) according to a CNN story on television. They had an specialist who specializes in the anatomy of death by hanging.

If you want to know the mechanisms of hanging, continue to read... If you do not want to continue reading, go to this site.

  1. The noose is designed to allow Saddam to fall down a specific length down to give maximum force that will enable his spine to snap under his body weight.
  2. With his spine snapped, he will paralyzed below the neck and unable to feel any pain and the brain goes haywire, unable to function properly.
  3. During the immediate moment his neck snaps, the noose tightens; tight enough to crush the windpipe and arteries in the neck.
  4. It will take three minutes for the brain to use up whatever oxygen remains in the blood above the noose.
  5. After approximately three minutes, he will be declared brain death and his heart may continue to beat for up to ten minutes.

Now that's the Middle East version of entertainment eh?

Employment Update:

Hello everyone, hope you had a great holiday celebrating the birthday of the person you never met before.

As some of you may have known that I was working at Cold Springs Farm again as a temporary worker to get enough turkeys prepared for the holidays.  After many long hours of hard thinking and consideration.  What I had to consider was accepting the depressing feeling of seeing my friends with disappointed faces or the joy of seeing my friends with happy faces.  I decided to submit my curriculum vitae to my supervisor.  It turns out that Mark and I were hired to be on the Special Value Team so now I will have the joy of seeing my friend with happy faces knowing that I helped provide enough turkeys for them to consume.

We are doing 480 hours of work and will see if they hire us as full time workers.  Do not worry, my business career is still in  my mind, but ensuring my friends' happiness is my number one priority.

Designers Babies: Embryo Screening

This article puts the spotlight on genetic engineering of babies.  It says not only Deaf people, but Dwarfs are using embryo screening technology to find embryos that lack the gene to create children that are alike them.   The article focuses mainly on people who are dwarfs and the embryo screening professionals' reactions.

At the very end of the article, there is a Deaf woman who is interviewed who is dumb enough to say "because I think it is wrong to choose the perfect baby."  She has to understand people like me who hate Deaf-impaired people and if my kid was born Deaf-impaired, I would consider it disabled and turn it to the state ward.

Again the professionals who provide the service keep on saying it is unethical for us to do this, well cramming devices that make 18 month old Deaf children permanently cyborgs is unethical in the Deaf community!  So we, the Deaf people do not need to be lectured on what is ethical; the audists need to be lectured...

Boxing Day:

Hope everyone had a great Boxing Day (for those in America, simply put - a great day).

Today my aunt and uncle from my mother's side came to visit from Toronto. They are Deaf-impaired as well so I was surrounded by Deaf-impaired people all day long and ended up asking what was being said most of the day. When I was not in the mood to be involved with their discussions, I decided to dive into my father's book that he left lying on the coffee table.

I believe my father has been fascinated with socialist countries and leaders such China and Cuba so the book I happened to pick up was about Fidel Castro. I have read about eighty percent of the book so far and have reached the point of Elián Gonzalez and the year John Pope II visited Cuba.

Basically it covers the whole story of Fidel's life and the interesting thing that the book mentioned was when Fidel came to power, the majority of people who fled into exile were the wealthy white people and some with African / Latin ancestry. The second and third wave of emigrants from Cuba to Florida were mainly poor Cubans, doing exactly the same thing Mexicans are doing. At both waves the United States and Cuba agreed on those and the United States realized that too many Cubans were planing on coming so they decided to block them, sending most of them to Peru.

The majority of these poor Cubans did not have anything against Fidel or the Cuban government, they simply wanted to do the work Americans do not want to do and are willing to be exploited by the American corporations for lower than average wage. Their intended plan was to earn money and send the money back. Is all this caused by the embargo the United States has imposed on Cuba for the last four decades? Would the economic and living standards of the average Cubans have been better if there was never an embargo? The economic and living standards of the average Cuban citizen improved after the Batista dictatorship was removed from power.

Another interesting thing was Fidel's primary goal for Cuba was to free Cuba from American imperialism, he was aware that tension would develop between the United States. When he decided to nationalize industries that were mainly controlled by Americans he offered substantial compensation for the land and property seized by the government. The majority of his offers were rejected by the Americans and wealthy people. The image America has portrayed Fidel as a leader who just grabbed land away from their owners and redistributed them to the poor peasants, is completely different than what is said in the book. So technically Fidel tried his best to be fair.

Fidel never considered himself a Marxist-Leninst, but a socialist and wanted to improve the social standards of Cuba. When he came to power, he expected to resume business with the United States and not pose an immediate threat to the United States. With the United States' hostile attitude and refusal to work with an independent Cuba and Fidel's new government, Fidel was "forced" to look for other states to conduct business with and that was the Union Soviet, which was considered a communist state. With Cuba's relationship with the Union Soviet, the United States became even more hostile, forcing Fidel to become more involved with the politics of the Union Soviet. This is where he became more involved with the Marx-Lenin theory and "applied" some, but not all of them to the Cuban government. Fidel made attempts to show that Cuba did not share the same ideology as the Union Soviet and other communist states.

His very first visit to the United States for the United Nations assembly as the leader of Cuba was very interesting. He had the opportunity to meet Malcom X, slept and dined in Harlem with the poor citizens of the United States. All those opportunities occurred because the hotel refused to accept Fidel's money and the United States government refused to invite Fidel when the United States invited all the other nations' representatives for dinners.

I guess I have said too much, there are so many facts that I would love to comment on, but since everyone is busy, I will leave the rest for you to read if you ever get a hold of the book. It is not a complicated book to read, it is very easy to read and have plenty of pictures.

High-Tech Cat's Eyes?

On Wednesday, I was driving towards Rochester to visit FrecklesFly and just before getting off the 403, for the first time I thought I was imagining things! There were lights floating underneath my car as I moved forward, that sure baffled me and made me wonder if I was seeing things that I should not be seeing so I doubled checked my rear view mirror and sure enough there were lights lined up behind my car. I was so sure those cat's eyes were not reflective, but powered by LED-like bulbs.

All the time, I have wondered if that was really what I saw. Today I had the opportunity to double check to see if these cat's eyes were really powered by lights instead of reflective material.

Here are the photos, I had to show the world those high-tech cat's eyes - if anyone else saw something like that in Canada or the Untied States, let me know and tell me the location/which roads.

Close - up photo...

UN adopts landmark bill for disabled rights:

Was reading this article on CBC's website about United Nation's bill for Disabled Rights. This bill is supposed:

"Promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity."
This brings me to question which people are involved with the development of this bill.

Is the committee made up of so called "experts on disabled people"? I have not read the full text on the convention, but where do Deaf people fit in this bill? What issues have been taken in consideration to improve the quality of Deaf people's lives? Were these considerations or recommendations made by those "audist experts" who do not care about our inherent dignity and think Deaf people need to be repaired with cocklear implants or magic pills?

According to CBC, the next step is to get Canada to ratify this bill, let's see how fast Canada does this - hopefully with the same speed as Canada's ratification of the bill on Women and Children's rights. Let's see if this landmark bill actually makes a mark on land. :)

NBC REPORT: MOST IP RELAY CALLS ARE SCAMS

Thought this article was interesting - I got it from my weekly subscription of Deaf Weekly.  Makes me wonder what the 85 to 90% of scams were about and who they contact.

"The IP Relay system may help criminals more than the deaf community, reported MSNBC last week. About 22 million calls are placed through IP Relay each year at a cost of $92.5 million, but one former operator, Cathy Audia, said about 85 to 90 percent of calls she handled were scams. "Very rarely did we get an actually hearing-impaired call," she said. Another former operator, Sheila Satterwhite, said, "I felt like a criminal every day I left work." A memo obtained by NBC showed an IP Relay director warning operators not to discuss the issue publicly. "Please do not risk your jobs and your own integrity," wrote the director."

Other than that previous post...

I have been busy working at CSF once again for the winter holidays. This time, I have the night shift, working an average of 8 hours from 1800 to 0200 the next day. When comparing my first time working at CSF in September, the work was very repetitive and they rarely gave us the opportunity to rotate and do a variety of tasks.

I got the opportunity to rack the turkeys on the conveyor, this task is the task I like the most because it requires a lot of thinking, coordination and skills. A few other people have tried to do that task, but ended up missing a lot of racks and/or dropping the turkeys.

Another task, which helps keep us warm is bending the turkey legs so they go through the turkey's anus hole or what ever you call it (hole in tummy that exits in the hole below the turkey tail). That task makes you very hot, but really puts a toll on your palm and wrist and after first two days you could see a round bruise on my right palm. After a night off, it seems to have disappeared.

Another job, which is pretty much equally as boring as the easiest task is stretching and making sure the chest cavity are open so it is easier for the liver and heart packets to be inserted. Good exercise for your forearm muscles (if you want to prepare for an arm wrestling match).

The last task which is the most boring and easiest job is cramming the liver and heart packets into the turkeys, just as we did in September.

Thought I'll google images to see if I could find something similar to what I do. This website has some photos, the processing plant looks 100 times larger, 100 times cleaner, 100 times brighter than the processing plant I work at. The second last photo is pretty much the same department I work in at CSF.

At least you know who is preparing your turkeys for the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.

I'll have an order of triple-bypass, flatliners, cigs, a beer served by...

all from the

HEART ATTACK GRILL

this is just a joke, i am still a vegetarian in case you were wondering

Three recommended finalists for Gayaudet's Interim-President announced

I received this email from one of those idiots who added my email to some Gayaudet or Deaf emailing list.  This one got my attention because they got three candidates for the interim-president as they look for a permanent president.  The first one in list is Robert Davila, former Vice-President of NTID at RIT.

I do not know the other two candidates, but I wanted to comment on Robert Davilla.  I do not think he is the best person for Gayaudet.  He probably supports Jane Fernandez's position on sign-language and other communication methods.  Look at NTID now.  NTID is flooded with non-signers and the faculty working at NTID do not sign in front of people who use sign-language as their mode of communication.  You can blame the current Vice-President, Alan Hurwitz, but I believe the problem may have started with Robert Davilla.  Robert Davilla did a lot for NTID and I am not trying to deny the good things he tried to do for NTID, but his introduction of NTID's Cocklear Implant Centre and securing grants from the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf are some of the few major contributions Davilla made that increased barriers for Deaf people who use sign-language.

These actions actually increased audism at RIT, for example non-signers actually successfully sued RIT for inadequate interpreting!  Yes you read that correctly, non-signers actually won their case of inadequate interpreting because they complained that the interpreters were too fluent in ASL!  If you were a student during the mid 90's and returned to RIT during the mid 00's you would immediately recognize reduced quality in ASL interpreting and increased total communication among the interpreters!

He is a member of Kappa Gamma; a so called purely Deaf fraternity and he probably was my first exposure to Kappa Gamma.  My impression of Kappa Gamma after finding out Davilla was a member was that Kappa Gamma was more oral than Kappa Phi Theta (but eventually I met more Kappa Gamma members who were not as oral as Davilla, so I bet Davilla was one of Kappa Gamma's rotten grapes).

I do not expect much to happen during the 18 to 24 months of the interim-president term, but if Robert Davilla is appointed the position and no one objects, then I would be very suripised because I think Robert Davilla is equal to Jane Fernandez's position.  Again, in a short time a lot can happen and who knows Davilla will accomplish what Fernandez would have accomplished if she maintained her presidency at Gayaudet.

I know everyone is sick of reading about Gayaudet these days due to all the chaos, but felt I need to express my thoughts about Robert Davilla and Gayaudet.

This is part of the email I received:

A notice has appeared on the official Web site of Gayaudet University, announcing the names of three finalists that are being recommended to the Gayaudet Board of Trustees for the position of Interim-President of Gayaudet University--a position that is expected to last from 18 to 24 months.

Final Three Candidates Announced

The Interim President Selection Advisory Committee forwarded its report containing recommendations of three finalist for the interim president position to the Board of Trustees for their consideration. The Board will meet this weekend, December 9-10, to make a final decision.

The three final candidates are:

Are you a Signer?

Was looking through www.deafread.com/ and saw this website about audism. It is done in video and Jody Cripps explains why he thinks we should start using "signer" instead of Deaf to identify our attitude towards audism.

I think it makes sense to start using "signer" than try to identify who is Deaf. This way we do not have to argue about who is a member of the Deaf community. If I did not use the word "signer" I would identify someone who is Deaf, but is an oral wannabe as a deaf person. Now I can say that person is not a signer.

View Jody Cripp's explaination on how he analyzed audism and came to the conculsion of using the vocabulary "signer".

Are you a Signer?

Police Brutality:

Am pretty sure most of you are already aware about this, but in case you have not seen these stories... about how police or people with higher authority mistreat Deaf people here are some links to stories of police brutality.

The story that got my attention was the one about 56-year old Doug Bahl in St. Paul, MN. Apparently the Pig did not realize Bahl was Deaf and decided to use his toy to beat him up. To see what harm the long arms of the law did to Bahl, view those photos [ 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 ].

There is another story about a Deaf man being held down by three people and died after being unable to breathe. There are many more - one of the most famous and well known incident involved Gayaudet University's security personnels and Carl Dupree.

With all this happening, it makes me wonder if anything like those incidents occurred in Canada? Do the pigs in Canada get any training on how to approach Deaf people?

Drinking Problem:
