Day Thirty-One

Day Thirty-One - 25.06.05 - [Venice -> Lake Como]

  • Got up at 8h30 (thought that it was 7h30 with FrecklesFly's watch) showered and signed out.
  • Was disappointed that we could not get 10% discount because we reserved on-line, if we had not we would have gotten the discount with our receipt from the campground in Rome.
  • Took the train to Milano at 9h52, switched trains and headed to Lake Como.
  • We got there at 14h05 and after a bit of figuring out, we finally found the street that took us to our hostel.
  • We got to the hostel, only to find out that it opened at 16h and it started raining cats and dogs again! We had to find a place to stay dry and we found a tunnel and stayed in it for a few minutes.
  • After the rain stopped, we decided to look for a place to eat to kill 1h and come back to the hostel, but a guy who worked at the hostel saw us and decided to make reservations for us and told us to come back in a hour.
  • Had two drinks at a bar across the street while we waited.
  • Signed in the hostel and after that we studied the map and look at points of interest in the town for tomorrow.
  • We headed out to Bar Black Panther because they offered free internet if we bought snacks there. So here I am.

Amount Spent: €147.00 (including payment for camp in Venice and Lake Como)

Day Thirty - 24.06.05 - [Venice]

  • Started the day by catching the bus to Venice and we headed to Pont Rialto.
  • We kind of spent most of the time looking in stores that sold jewellery and glass. I decided that I liked the glass pens they were selling so I started looking for one I liked.
  • We kind of got lost and ended up walking to the north part of the island before heading back south.
  • Stopped by a pizzeria for pizza to add some energy to find San Marco and Pont Rialto.
  • Found San Marco immediately after eating! The place had so many piegons that they were selling seeds for people to feed the piegons with, we got a pack of seeds and fed the piegons.
  • We took pictures of eachother feeding piegons, they were all over our hands, arms and shoulders!
  • Headed to Pont Rialto, the bridge was full of stores selling jewellery or glass products, I found a small glass pen being sold for €13 so I got it. (a smaller souvenier than my father's huge HB stein!)
  • We headed back to the bus stop and stopped by the grocery store to get some food for dinner, found cheap wine so we took advantage of the prices even though we already had two bottles of wine!
  • Got back to camp and had dinner, went to bed.
  • (note: autobus in Italy seem to be free, however they are not, but it is easy to get rides on them for free!)

Amount Spent: €39.94

Day Twenty-Seven

Day Twenty-Nine - 23.06.05 [Venice]

  • Got up at 11h00 and decided today would be a relaxing day, at around 12h00 we headed to the pool and relaxed and soaked in the sun with a short dip in the cold tub until 15h00.
  • Got ready to spend the afternoon in Venice and grabbed the autobus to Venice, walked around and our main goal was to find Cafe Blue with free internet access.
  • After a few turns and walks along the water, we found Cafe Blue, ordered some drinks and got internet access.
  • We had to get off the computer once in a while due to others wanting internet access.
  • We had our first taste of Absinthe today! It tasted strange, but I liked it, FrecklesFly didn't really like the taste as much as I did.
  • We decided to walk around and try to find Rialto, but later we realized we did not have time due to the last bus leaving for our campground.
  • We decided to have a quick dinner at a Chinese restaurant that seemed to have good prices for their food.
  • We had three dishes, each costing approx €2.50 to €3.50 each, water and when the bill came, we were surpised that they charged each of us €1.30 for using chopsticks - no charge for using forks and knives! bizzare eh?!
  • We headed back to camp and went to bed.

Amount spent: €54.37

Day Twenty-Eight - 22.06.05 - [Rome -> Venice]

  • Got up at 7h, got ready to leave and met up with Buzzy, we signed out and Buzzy headed for his autobus to the airport, we headed to our bus that took us to the metro.
  • Got to the train station and got the first train we could find to Florence.
  • Got to Florence and figured out our way to the bus pick-up that would take us to the camp grounds we reserved for three nights.
  • Signed into the camp ground and got settled in, had our first night stay special dinner with pizza and drink then took a walk along the "canal" that was closed and could see the airport.
  • Took some time to read before going to bed.
Amount Spent: €111,90

Day Twenty-Seven - 21.06.05 - [Rome -> Naples -> Pompeii -> Rome]

  • Got up at 8h and got ready to go to the train station to catch a ride to Naples.
  • We did not realize that it took approximately 3h to get to Naples.
  • When we got there, we hurried to get a ride to Pompeii.
  • After getting to Pompeii, we were really hungry so we decided to have pizza dinner and some wine before exploring the ruins.
  • Actually we were hoping to try some pizza from the pizzeria, Pizzeria Brandi that still exisited and was said to be built in 1780 and still using the same oven.
  • We headed to the Pompeii ruins and walked around and saw several dead people formed into stone from teh eurption of Mt. Vesuvius on 24.08.AD79.
  • We headed back to Naples and then to Rome and arrived in Rome at approximately 22h and found out our metro was closed so we kind of panicked until we found out an autobus replaced our metro.
  • We finally got back to our campground and checked to see if Buzzair was awake, but he seemed to be asleep so we made our dinner and got ready to go to bed.
  • When I was ready to hit the sack, Buzzair came by and told us what happened at the hospital and told us he was heading home the next day.
  • It was sad to know he had decided to leave, I was kind of hoping he would be able to make it through.

Amount Spent: €52,05

Day Twenty-Six - 20.06.05 - [Rome]

  • Got up at 7h30 and FrecklesFly seemed to want to sleep more so I read a little bit.
  • I made breakfast as she got up and we left to look around Rome.
  • Our first stop was at the Colosseo and they accepted only cash and charged us €3.50 extra for audio guide because we were Deaf so we facked the Colosseo!
  • We headed to the Platino and Foro Romano, no discount too so we facked them too and finally found a free path through the ruins.
  • We were surpised to see people sitting and having picinics on rocks and sculptures on the path.
  • FrecklesFly decided to relax and sit on one of the stones and I thought the background made a perfect one for a picture so we took pictures.
  • An ugly Italian man got all angry and spoke gibberish that we could not understand so we tried to explain that we were Deaf and the man held up his favourite toy, a whistle! (Perfect for Deaf people eh?!)
  • What a dumb man we thought as we ignored him and walked away heading for the Pantheon and that was something that was finally free in Rome! There was not much to see there.
  • Our next destination was to see the Fontana di Trevi then to see Plazzo Barberini, hoping to escape from the heat to explore the cool crypts of deaf bodies.
  • We could not find the crypt so we decided to head to Piazza di Spagna before heading back to camp.
  • We met up with Buzzair and found out he was not getting better so we decided to go and soak in the cold tub before haing dinner and calling it a night.

Amount Spent: €76,93

Day Twenty-Five - 19.06.05 - [Rome -> Vatican City -> Rome]

  • Got up at 6h to start our laundry. Clothes dryer did not work so I had to hang up our clothes on the line.
  • We relaxed at the campground in the cold tub and read our books until 16h when we decided our clothes were dry enough to put away.
  • We finally headed to Vatican City, our first stop was at St. Peters.
  • Some how we stumbled into an underground graveyard that was under St. Peters and saw the newest dead Pope's grave. Was not allowed to take pictures of it, silly to be allowed to take pictures of other dead people's graves, but not pictures of a new dead person eh?!
  • We were not able to find the Sistine Chapel - only irony is that the Vatican City is only 0.4 km square and we could not find a chapel!
  • It seemed like it was going to rain so we decided to head back to camp and just as we got on the bus it started raining cats and dogs!
  • We chatted and had dinner before going to bed and found out that Buzzair had tonsilitis and I hope he would be able to heal soon so he can enjoy his Euro trip!

Amount Spent: €12,83

Day Twenty-Four - 18.06.05 - [Florence ->Rome]

  • Got up at 9h and packed up, ate our leftover food from last night.
  • We said good bye to our host and headed to Piazzale Michelangelo after using our remining 1h of internet time.
  • The day was very hot and we had to carry our backpacks all over the city. It really fustrated FrecklesFly a lot too!
  • The piazzle was at the top of a very long walk up the hill and it was a litte past noon.
  • The rest of our walk was down hill so the hardest part was over.
  • We went across Ponte Veccnio, saw a lot of jewelery stores and people getting married.
  • Our next stop was at Piazza Della Signoria, saw many statues of Greek Myths then we headed to Piazza del Duomo and the church was being repaired.
  • We proceed to Piazza M.D. Aldobbandini and was not impressed with the view so we hurried to the train station to catch a ride to Rome.
  • On the way to the train station, we stopped at McDonald's for our very first European McDonald's food! We got their Italian Music Potatos (hopefully Canada and USA does not have them now).
  • We arrived in Rome and went straight to our campground and signed in and met up with Buzzair with no problem.
  • Headed to the grocery store for food for the next four days.
  • Went for a quick swim in the pool and had dinner then went to bed.

Amount Spent: €36.18

Day Twenty-Three

Day Twenty-three - 17,06,05 [Monterosso -> Pisa -> Florence]

  • Took the morning train from Monterosso to Pisa
  • Headed to the leaning tower of Pisa, but our tour is at 14h40 so we are killing time by updating our blog (internet is cheaper here than it was at Cinque Terre).
  • Buzzair left for Rome while we waited for our trip up the leaning tower.
  • Walking up the stairs in the tower felt funny, we could see the wear on the stairs move from the right to the left everytime we went up due to people adjusting their balance to the slope of the tower.
  • After the tower, we bumped into one of the staff who worked at ResLife, the woman told us her name was Carol or Carrie, I cannot remember.
  • We checked out a church and walked through several markets on the way to the train station, we bought some stuffed japleno peppers with olives, they were delicous and spicy!
  • We caught a train to Florence, and once we arrived, we tried to get a room in several hostels, the first recommended by Let's Go was full, and the several ones they recommended were full and two people were observing us from a cafe and caught our attention and gave us a business card for another hostel, we though they were just another bunch of people trying to convince travellers into taking an expensive room so we just nodded and headed to the train station to get some help.
  • The train station called several hostels for us, including the number on the business card. The business card said they would look for us and the person called back and told us they found a room for us at 35 euro per person, not our price, but it was almost 22h00 so we decided to accept.
  • The hostel person was nice and chatted with us, showed us around the hostel and told us the people who owned the room would be here in ten minutes and they showed up, they were the same people who gave us the business card! They drove us to the room in a golf cart for approx 15 minutes.
  • The room had a washroom with a toilet in the shower, kitchen with all the necessary supplies to cook, etc... The host gave us a map and circled the important spots for us to look at the next day.
  • We headed out to get groceries and decided to get pasta and cooked our first European dinner in the kitchen for no more than 4 euros and were full after consuming half of what we cooked so we saved the leftovers for breakfast.
  • A Final Note: We have taken 883 pictures so far and plan to try and take 4.360 more pictures! (adjusted our camera ability to take normal pictures from super-fine pictures.)
Amount Spent: €120.42

Day Twenty-two - 16,06,05 [
Monterosso -> Vernazza -> Corniglia -> Manarola -> Riomaggiore -> Monterosso]
  • Got up early and had some onion pizza before hiking to Vernazza.
  • The hike was very steep with a lot of steps going up the hills and mountains across grape vine farms.
  • The view was great and it was a good exercise.
  • We got to Vernazza, since we spent time last night at Vernazza, FrecklesFly and I decided to keep on hiking to Corniglia while Buzzair stayed and rested due to his mono.
  • We agreed to meet Buzzair at the nudist beach at 12h15.
  • The hike to Corniglia was not as hard as the first hike, the view was awesome too.
  • We were starting to feel very weak so we decided to look for a place to eat before meeting Buzzair.
  • We had delicous lettuce, tomato and mozzellera(sp) cheese and pesto and brie sandwiches.
  • We headed to the nudist beach, but found out it costed €5 to enter so we facked the beach and headed to Manarola on trian due to the hiking path being closed.
  • We got there, the town was smaller and we looked for Buzzair at the marina to see if he went there for a swim instead, we could not find him so we spent some time looking around town.
  • We missed the train to Riomaggiore so we hiked there, the hike was easier than the two hikes we did and took us approximately twenty minutes to get there.
  • The town was much smaller, but the food was cheaper there so we did our grocery shopping before catching the train to Monterosso.
  • We had a quick swim at the beach before it got dark and made dinner, then spent some time reading in bed before falling asleep.
  • Note: I think I lost €100 or €150 that day due to my sweaty hands sticking to the money when taking out the camera for some pictures! Today was not the best day for me when it comes to money! :(
Amount Spent: €67.95

Day Twenty-one - 15,06,05 [Monterosso]
  • Got up early in the morning and paid the man for the room we slept in and decided to try and get another room for less money than we paid for last night.
  • We found a hotel with rooms for €25 per person, we decided we would look around some more and also look for an internet cafe to get in touch with Buzzair.
  • As we were looking for the internet cafe, we bumped into Buzzair shopping for some fruits and found out he was staying at the same place we just asked for prices and we decided to sneak ourselves into his room and spilt the cost of the room with the three of us to save €20 per night for each of us.
  • After that, we decided to go to the beach, FrecklesFly and I went along the cost to see the other beach, but went back to the first beach we stopped at and went for a swim and we swm to the wave breaker and back to shore.
  • We went to Vernazza for dinner and had great pizza and bruschetta. The waiter was nice and gave FrecklesFly a free bottle of €15 worth of wine and a free sweater.
  • We had a great view of the harbour and sun setting down behind the mountains that surrounded Monterosso.
  • After dinner we left and headed back to our room and went to bed.
Amount Spent: €61.20

Day Twenty - 14,06,05 [Marsilles ->Nice -> to a Italian Town -> La Spezia -> Monterosso]
  • Got up at 6h30 to shower before having breakfast.
  • We hurried to try and catch the 8h40 train to Nice, but missed the train so we had to wait until 11h20 for the next avilable train and decided to go to an Italian town near France.
  • We caught the next train headed to La Spezia and hurried to figure out how to catch a train to Monterosso to meet Buzzair.
  • We found the train and followed some Canadian guys who said they were going there and for some reason they were going to a different town that passed Monterosso so we had to hurry up and find another train back to Monterosso.
  • We got to Monterosso at around 23h with no room for the night we decided to go to a local pub and found a nice old man who took us to two hotels before deciding to show us a room.
  • The room was loaded with a kitchen, big bed, small bed, dininig table, nice balcony with view of the town and good bathroom that had a clothwashing machine, but the price was very expensive, approximately €30 per person, but we had no choice becuase it was late at night so we accepted.
Amount Spent: €64.00

  • Relaxed and read our books until a little bit before noon, got ready to see the city.
  • Checked out train schedules for leaving Marsilles.
  • Headed to Notre Dame de Lagarde, then to Abbaye St Victor, tried to get into Fort Saint Nicholas, but couldn't find the enterance.
  • We decided to head to the other side of the harbour to try and find the memorial from the Nazis occupation of Marsilles, but couldn't find anything so we walked around Fort Saint Jean.
  • Now here I am at the internet cafe, after the cafe we will look for a vegeterian restaurant that was mentioned in Let's Go.

Amount Spent: €49.70

Day Eighteen - 12,06,05 [Nimes -> Marsilles]
  • Got up, Buzzair was not back from the hostpital so we decided to make it a slow morning.
  • By the time we were ready to leave the hostel, we decided to check email and let Buzzair know we will stop by the hospital.
  • We got to the bus stop and found out that the bus system was very very lousy on Sundays so we decided to try to walk to the next bus stop and hopefully the bus would arrive, but we got there and still had plenty of time so we decided to walk to the next bus stop for the bus we were supposed to transfer to (we walked about 1/2 way to the hospital from the hostel).
  • We finally caught a bus to the hospital and figured out where to meet Buzzair.
  • He was ready to leave and we realized we should have brought his backpack for him, however we decided to spilt up - Buzzair would stay in Nimes while FrecklesFly and I headed to Marsilles.
  • We figured out the time schedule for the train to Marsilles and it took us almost one hour to get there.
  • We took the metro to the bus stop that would take us to the hostel, getting to the hostel we paid and got into our room and had dinner.
  • We decided to go for a walk on the beach near our hostel and looked for a store that sold drinks and we found a store that sold good fruit juice and another that sold beer.
  • I bought some 1886 beer and one can of 11.6% Amsterdam beer to warm myself up for Amsterdam.
  • Got back, had our beer (the beverage FrecklesFly got tasted like Ouzo mixed with water) and had some fries.
  • We decided to go back to our room and read a littlebit before calling it a night.

Amount Spent: €26.80

Day Seventeen - 11,06,05 [Nimes]
  • We got up at around 9h30 and got ready for the day.
  • We headed to the train station to figure out how to get to Pont du Gare, figured we had to take a bus out there at the price of €9,90 round trip.
  • Got there and hiked down to see the structure, amazing view and saw people swimming and diving into the river that flowed under the old aquaduct.
  • Had lunch then headed back to get on the bus, found out that the bus syste, was crappy - it was 16h45 and the next bus came at 18h45, but did not come to pick us up where it dropped us off, we had to walk one kilometer to get to the pick-up stop.
  • Bus picked us up after a two-hour wait!
  • Got back, Buzzair was not feeling good so he decided to go to the hospital while we headed back to the hostel.
  • Stopped to get bread and veggies for dinner, but ended up having fries and goat cheese salad at the hostel along with beer and wine.
  • By 22h we started wondering why Buzzair had not gotten back so we checked our email and found out he was at the hospital getting blood tests, the hostel staff called the hospital and said the hospital would call back with the blood test results.
  • We went to bed and approximately 1h later the staff came in and said Buzzair would be spending the nite in the hospital.

Day Sixteen

Day Sixteen - 10.06.05 [Barcelona -> Nimes]

TBA

Day Fifteen - 09.06.05 [Barcelona]

TBA

Day Fourteen - 08.06.05 [Barcelona]

  • Arrived in Barcelona at approximately 08:45.
  • A nice guy helped us get around the train station and showed us how to find the metro. We wanted to find out how to get to Nimes (because usually trains require reservations, for those planning to travel in Europe, keep in mind that train reservations are usually required and those reservations have fees to be paid that are not included with the Eurail pass) the guy helped us find the train and helped us find out that we could get on the train for free. He some how negotated with the people to get the cost of the train from €9,00 to €0.00 - that was helpful for us, hopefully we can do that with future reservations.
  • We got a day pass for the metro in Barcelona and rode to the Sun and Moon hostel, hoping that they would have room for the 8th and 9th because we reserved for the 10th and 11th of June. They told us to come back at 13:30.
  • We decided to walk around to kill time, Buzzy found the EasyInternet cafe and wanted to surf the net, FrecklesFly and I decided to walk around town and we ended up seeing the Cathederal in the old Roman Walls of Barcelona.
  • We met Buzzy at the hostel at 13:30 and signed in and got beds for us.
  • We decided to look for Le´Example, but ended up not being able to find so we headed to Sagrada Familia and hoped they would let Deaf people in for free, but we had no luck.
  • Buzzy didn´t want to pay €5,00 to enter the church so we decided to spilt up and meet at the hostel.
  • After Sagrada Familia, FrecklesFly and I headed to Parque Guell and were amazed at the view and design of the park.
  • We headed back to the hostel and met Buzzy, found out that Buzzy was suffering a bad headache.
  • FrecklesFly and I made our dinner - nice thin bread loaf with gouda cheese, lettuce and some sauce that we cannot figure becuase the name is in Spainsh.
  • We decided to head to the bar because we wanted to watch some soccer, first bar we found the beer and wine was expensive and there was no food so we headed back to the bar beside our hostel.
  • Buzzy ordered some tapas and grub, we had a hard time figuring out what was in the grub because Buzzy hated seafood and thought there was seafood, but the waiteress kept on saying it came from pig guts, we gave up on trying to figure what that stuff was.
  • I headed to the vegeterian Greek place near our hostel and ordered Fafel pita and fries with mayo, they were delicous!
  • We called it a night around midnight.

Amount Spent: €TBA

  • We stopped for snacks and ended up meeting a Deaf guy named Valier who lived in Lagos and owned his web-based company.
  • On our way back to the bus station, we met some Canadian and Australian women that we met on the train from Madrid via Lisbon and Lisbon via Lagos and found out they were headed to Salema on the same bus we were riding!
  • The bus left Lagos at 13:45 and got to Seville at 20:00, we hurried to the train station.

Amount Spent: €92,38 (including €50,00 room and board)

Day Twelve - 06.06.05 [Salema]

  • We woke up at around 10 and Buzzy told us he was going to the pizza place to eat lunch so we got ready for the day and met up with Buzzy at the pizza place.
  • The pizza was delicous and we learned to love oil mixed with vinegar with our bread and pizza since we got to Salema! (there were flies in the vinegar at the pizza place, but that didn´t stop us from eating our food)
  • We headed back to the beach and relaxed there all afternoon until around 1700, Frecklesfly and I went to look for bus information so we knew how to get back to Lagos the next morning.
  • We headed back home and did our laundry, Frecklesfly started sewing my Canadian flag on to my backpack (thanks to her!).
  • We had wine and sandwich of apricot jam and cheese and then went to bed.

  • We went for a swim and relaxed on the beach and walked along the coast.
  • At 14:00 we met Sarah, the British woman we meat at the bar and went to her parents villa for the afternoon.
  • Her parents´villa was awesome, it was located at the top of a hill with an awesome view across the town and coast! There was also a pool there and it was nice to swim in too!
  • We played two games of scrambles, Buzzy won the first game and the second game was men against women and we finished the game with no actual winner.
  • We were out of vodka and beer so Buzzy and Sarah went to the store to get more.
  • Later Sarah grilled huge shrimps on the bbq and had pizza and salad to go with the shrimps. I decided to eat the shrimps and pizza that had ham on it instead of telling her that I was a vegeterian becuase I didn´t want her to go out of the way to change her food.
  • After dinner, we had a few more drinks, chatted a bit more, Buzzy and Sarah went swimming again before we all headed back to our zimmer.
  • We had fun walking back to our zimmer!

Amount Spent: €9,60

Day Ten - 04.06.05 [Lisbona -> Lagos -> Salema]

  • Arrived in Lisbona at approx 10:00 and found out our train to Lagos would leave at 13:20.
  • We decided to kill time by buying day passes for the metro and have a quick look around the city.
  • We decided to go to Castilo san de Jorge, we had to climb up 192 stair steps to get up to the castle!
  • We headed back and found out that reservations were required for the day train and barely made it for 13:20!
  • Rode on the train to Lagos, arrived there at around 17:00 and decided to fack Lagos because it was too touristic, too many Americanized places (note: McDonalds sells pitas in Portgual).
  • We found a bus to Salema, a small town of about 2,500 people 30 minutes west of Lagos.
  • We found a Zimmer and the old lady was nice, we agreed to pay 15€ per person for each night and the place was right on the beach with a beautiful view!
  • After settling in, we went out to O´Barco for dinner, they had great food and drinks, we met some English people there and had a good time.
  • After dinner, we headed to look for a bar, we found a bar that was very DEAD with the barman and one lady.
  • We decided to enter the bar and ended up bringing life to the bar and got several free shots!
  • The barman knew how to make good shots, one tasted sweet, like cake or ice cream!
  • The lady turned out to be from England and her parents had a villa in Salema and she invited us over the next day!
  • We had plenty to drink so we decided to call it a night.

Amount Spent: €106.75

  • We decided to go to the El Toreo stadium instead of the Mueso del Prado.
  • After that, we took the metro back to Checa Plaza.

Day Eight

  • Am in Madrid, will be heading to Lisbon, Portgual tomorrow night. Frecklesfly, Buzzy and I are having a great time!
  • I think Buzzy and I were more glad to leave Paris, the people in Madrid are more friendly than in Paris.
  • I apologize for not being able to provide detailed information about my trip due to limited time on the internet, however Buzzy has been travelling with Frecklesfly and me lately so his faithful pager lets
